Registered Dietitian
Definition:
-Fully educated expert in nutrition
-Provides science-based information to clients/patients
-Considered a medical professional
Education:
-Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree
-Complete a minimum of 1,200 hours of dietetic internship (a one year less intense version of medical residency)
-Pass national exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
-Completes 75 continuing education credits every five years
Accreditation:
-Registered with the Commission of Dietetics Registration
-Licensed to practice by their state as per that state’s rules & requirements
Nutritionist
Definition:
-Variable training, education, and professional qualifications relating to nutrition
-Only able to offer general nutrition advice at best, which must be based on the publicly available government-issued dietary guidelines
Education:
-None legally required, but can vary from none to having a college degree in nutrition
Accreditation:
-Varies from none to various nutrition courses and certifications
